The War Scroll

1 For the war is Yours, and by the power of Your hand their corpses were dashed in pieces, with none to bury. And Goliath the Gittite, a mighty man of valour,

2 You delivered into the hand of David Your servant, because he trusted in Your great name and not in sword and spear; for the war is Yours. And the

3 Philistines You subd[u]ed many times by Your holy name; and also by the hand of our kings You delivered us many times,

4 for the sake of Your mercies, and not according to our deeds, by which we did evil, nor according to the doings of our transgressions. The war is Yours, and from You is the might;

5 and it is not ours — not our strength, nor the might of our hands, has done valiantly, but by Your power and by the strength of Your great might, as You told

6 us of old, saying: A star has marched forth from Jacob, a sceptre has risen from Israel; and he shall shatter the temples of Moab and break down all the sons of Sheth,

7 and he shall come down from Jacob and destroy the survivor from the city; and the enemy shall be a possession, and Israel [blank] shall do valiantly. And by the hand of Your anointed ones,

8 seers of testimonies, You told us the ti[mes of ]the wars of Your hands, to fight heavily against our enemies, to bring down the bands of Belial, the seven

9 nations of vanity, by the hand of the poor of Your redemption, [ … ] and in peace, for wonderful might; and a melting heart, to open hope. And You shall do to them as to Pharaoh

10 and as to the captains of his chariots in the Sea of Ree[ds]. And the stricken of spirit You shall kindle like a torch of fire in a sheaf, devouring wickedness; it shall not turn back until

11 guilt is consumed. And of old You made [us hear the ap]pointed time of the might of Your hand against the Kittim, saying: And Assyria shall fall by a sword not of man, and a sword

12 not of mankind shall devour him. [blank]

13 For into the hand of the poor You shall deliver the [ene]mies ⟨the [nob]les⟩ of all the lands, and into the hand of those who kneel in the dust, to bring low the mighty of the peoples, to return the recompense of

14 the wicked upon the head of [ … ], and to justify the judgement of Your truth among all the sons of man, and to make for Yourself an everlasting name among a people

15 [ … ] the wars; and to magnify Yourself and to sanctify Yourself in the eyes of the remnant of the nations, that they may know [ … ]

16 [ … when You e]xecute judgements upon Gog and upon all his assembly, who are gath[e]red [ … ]

17 [ … ] for You will fight against them from the heav[ens … ]

18 [ … ] upon them, for confusion [ … ]
