The War Scroll

1 the orders of the war; and trumpets of the orders of the war; and trumpets of their summoning, when the gates of war are opened for the men of the ranks to go out; and trumpets of the war-shouts over the slain; and trumpets of

2 the ambush; and trumpets of the pursuit when the enemy is struck down; and trumpets of the assembly when the battle returns. On the trumpets for summoning the congregation they shall write: The Called of God.

3 And on the trumpets for summoning the commanders they shall write: The Princes of God. And on the trumpets of the formations they shall write: The Rule of God. And on the trumpets of the men of

4 renown they shall write: The Heads of the Fathers' Houses of the Congregation. When they gather to the house of assembly they shall write: The Testimonies of God for the Counsel of Holiness. And on the trumpets of the camps

5 they shall write: The Peace of God in the Camps of His Holy Ones. And on the trumpets of their marches they shall write: The Mighty Deeds of God, to Scatter the Enemy and to Put to Flight All Who Hate

6 Righteousness, and the Withdrawal of Mercy from Those Who Hate God. And on the trumpets of the orders of the war they shall write: The Orders of the Standards of God, for the Vengeance of His Anger upon All the Sons of Darkness.

7 And on the trumpets for summoning the men of the ranks, when the gates of war are opened for them to go out to the battle-line of the enemy, they shall write: A Memorial of Vengeance at the Appointed Time of

8 God. And on the trumpets over the slain they shall write: The Hand of the Might of God in Battle, to Bring Down All the Slain of Unfaithfulness. And on the trumpets of the ambush they shall write:

9 The Mysteries of God, to Destroy Wickedness. And on the trumpets of the pursuit they shall write: God Has Struck Down All the Sons of Darkness; His Anger Shall Not Turn Back Until They Are Consumed.

10 And when they return from the battle to enter the battle-line, they shall write on the trumpets of the return: God Has Gathered. And on the trumpets of the way of return

11 from the war against the enemy, to come to the congregation of Jerusalem, they shall write: The Rejoicings of God at the Return of Peace. [blank]

13 The rule of the standards of all the congregation, according to their formations. On the great standard which is at the head of all the people they shall write: The People of God — and the name of Israel

14 and Aaron, and the names of the twelve t[ribes of Israe]l according to their generations. On the standards of the heads of the camps, which are for the three tribes,

15 they shall write [ … O]n the standard of the tribe they shall write: The Banner of God — and the name of the prince of the tri[be … ]
