The Testament of Solomon

And I commanded another demon to be present before me. And a woman came before me in appearance, but her form, together with her limbs, was dishevelled with her hair.

And I said to her, “Who are you?” And she said, “And who are you? Or what need do you have to learn what my affairs are like? But if you wish to learn, go into the royal chambers and, having washed your hands, sit down again on your throne and ask me, and then you will learn, O king, who I am.”

And I, Solomon, having done this and sat on my throne, asked her and said, “Who are you?” And she said, “Obyzouth, who does not sleep at night, but roams all over the world among women, and watching the hour, I seek out and strangle infants, and every night I do not go forth without doing mischief. But you cannot command me. And I go about in inaccessible places.”

“And my work is nothing but the destruction of infants and the injuring of eyes and the condemnation of mouths and the ruin of minds and the pain of bodies.”

And when I, Solomon, heard these things, I was amazed, and I did not behold her form, but her body was darkness and her hair was wild.

And I, Solomon, say to her, “Tell me, evil spirit, by what angel are you rendered inactive?” And she said to me, “By the angel Raphael. And when women give birth, write my name on a piece of paper, and I will flee from there.”

And I, having heard these things, commanded her to be bound by her hair and to be hung before the temple so that all the passing sons of Israel, seeing, would glorify God who gave me this authority.
