The Testament of Solomon
English, translated by Online Critical Pseudepigrapha — Online Critical Pseudepigrapha, English of the critical text
And having blessed God, I commanded another demon to be present before me. And another spirit came before me, having the form of a woman, but with two other heads on its shoulders, along with hands.
And I asked her, “Tell me, who are you?” And she said to me, “I am Enephegos, who is also called by myriad names.”
And I said to her, “By what angel are you rendered inactive?” And she said to me, “What are you seeking? What do you need? I transform myself as a so-called goddess, and I transform myself again and become having another form.”
“And do not wish to know all about me by this means, but since you are present to me, listen to this: I sit beside the moon and for this reason I possess three forms.”
“When I am magically constrained by the wise, I become like Kronos. But when I come down again concerning those who bring me down, I appear in another form. The measure of the element is unconquered and unlimited and inactive. Therefore, I transform myself into three forms and come down and become such as you see.”
“But I am rendered inactive by the angel Rathanel, who sits in the third heaven. Therefore, I say to you: this temple cannot contain me.”
Therefore, I, Solomon, having prayed to my God and having invoked the angel whom he mentioned to me, Rathanael, made the seal and sealed it with a threefold chain, and below the bonds of the chain I made the seal of God.
And the spirit prophesied to me, saying: “These things, King Solomon, you do for us. But after some time your kingdom will be torn apart for you, and again in time this temple will be broken apart, and all Jerusalem will be gathered together by the king of the Persians, Medes, and Chaldeans. And the vessels of this temple which you make will serve other gods.”
“Along with these, all the vessels in which you confine us will be broken by human hands, and then we will come forth with great power from here, and we will be scattered throughout the world.”
“And we will wander throughout the whole inhabited world for a long time until the Son of God is stretched out on a tree. For no such king like him will arise, who will nullify all of us, whose mother will mingle with a man.”
“And who will receive such power over spirits except for him? Whom the first devil will seek to tempt, and he will not prevail against him, whose numerical value of the name is 600, which is Emmanuel.”
“Therefore, King Solomon, your time is evil, and your years are few and evil, and your kingdom will be given to your servant.”
And I, Solomon, having heard these things, glorified God and, marveling at the answers of the demons concerning the consequences, I disbelieved them and did not believe the things spoken by them.
But when they came to pass, then I understood, and in my death, I wrote this testament for the sons of Israel and gave it to them so that they might know the powers of the demons, their forms, and the names of the angels by whom the demons are rendered powerless.
And having glorified the Lord, the God of Israel, I commanded the spirit to be bound with indissoluble bonds.
